To host a website on the internet, an individual or company would need their own computer or server. As not all companies had the budget or expertise to do this, web hosting services began to offer to host users' websites on their own servers, without the client needing to own the necessary infrastructure required to operate the website. The owners of the websites, also called webmasters, would be able to create a website that would be hosted on the web hosting service's server and published to the web by the web hosting service.
Yes, you can upgrade or downgrade your web hosting plan through your Account Management Panel (AMP). Upgrading your web hosting account is a quick and easy process which does not affect your live website with any downtime. When the task is completed, you receive a confirmation email from our systems administration. If you have several domains or a shared web hosting plan, it is simple to upgrade or downgrade your account.
The user gets his or her own Web server and gains full control over it (user has root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); however, the user typically does not own the server. One type of dedicated hosting is self-managed or unmanaged. This is usually the least expensive for dedicated plans. The user has full administrative access to the server, which means the client is responsible for the security and maintenance of his own dedicated server.
Usually a single machine placed in a private residence can be used to host one or more web sites from a usually consumer-grade broadband connection. These can be purpose-built machines or more commonly old PCs. Some ISPs actively attempt to block home servers by disallowing incoming requests to TCP port 80 of the user's connection and by refusing to provide static IP addresses. A common way to attain a reliable DNS host name is by creating an account with a dynamic DNS service. A dynamic DNS service will automatically change the IP address that a URL points to when the IP address changes.

While WordPress is technically blogging software, it's been called a website builder, a content management system, and even an eCommerce platform — basically, a website-building multitool. Because it's open-sourced, the core code can be adapted to meet virtually any website need, and the wealth of plugins and WP-friendly apps built by third-party developers makes this platform a go-to for website owners around the world.

Hello Carl, As I understand it, internet speed performance is as much to do with each individual computer's hardware and internet connection, as it is to do with the number of companies sharing the same server. Servers are very powerful and shared ones tend to be quite industrial in size - so I'm sure the knock-on effects would be almost non-existent unless someone had a sudden crazy burst of traffic. Wix offer hosting as well, so it's worth considering a Wix premium plan (which provides hosting free of charge!) and seeing how you get on. In the worst case scenario, you find that the Wix premium plan doesn't work for you and then this will indicate that using a platform like WordPress with a third party hosting plan might be more aligned with your needs. Hope that gives you some food for thought! - Tom
Developer Friendly - Back in 2003, when we first began hosting websites, our focus was to offer support for the very best software. In fact, we were one of the very first website hosting options to offer PHP 5. That's really how we made a name for ourselves! While technology has changed over the years, our dedication to supporting the very best software has not. At A2 Hosting, you get support for the best versions of PHP, MySQL, MariaDB, Node.js, Apache and so much more!
